That Supra sounds fucking fantastic.
I disdain all the snap-cuts for their supposedly ‘artsy’ shots and incessant slow-mo.
Just let me watch this guy drive the damn car already!!!!!1

They have a ways to go until they match the artistry of Ken Block’s gymkana.

Honestly, I like this better. No gimmicks with obstacles or pre-planned production in the layouts—just a car, a road, and lots of passes for good camera angles. And while I appreciate both the precision of Ken Block’s driving in the final product, and the complexity of the builds of his cars, high-horsepower RWD drift cars exude a bit more grace (at least to my eye) than the tire-obliterating violence of one of Block’s Fiestas or the Hoonicorn.
I mean, I’ll still watch either because car content (and sideways, at that), but the difference between the two productions feels like Block and Hoonigan said to themselves: “What are some cool things we could have you do with your cars?” and admittedly, a number of the stunts are interesting and feel unique; but videos like this are born out of a different philosophy, “We made a badass car, where can we find a road that’s going to show it off while you drive?”
My summary comparison is that Block’s work feels like a collection of vines versus this representation of a short film.

Fair enough. I’d rather drift a RWD car than one of Block’s monsters anyhow, it’s just that the video productions are so involved and polished. Someone in this space told me that the engines in these cars are so highly tuned that they’re only good for a matter of hours of use before they have to be all torn down or whatever. Not very practical.

I’m sure you’re right, but that can be said about most anything once you’re far enough along the “ race parts/power” spectrum.
I should build up stuff that I like more than tear down that which I don’t, anyways. Good production values, I like. Grassroots stuff, drifting , and obnoxious blow-of-valves, I like.
A video like this gets me more excited than all the new Supra hype/reveals in the last few years. Which is fine, because I don’t expect to be able to afford either a mark IV or V—and I realize that since I’m not a potential buyer, Toyota isn’t looking to please me. But one of these days, I’d love to have skills that could approach this kind of car control; albeit with some more modest hardware.
We can dream, right?
